Chapter 4

“How is it possible that this sausage tastes better than it did yesterday?” Titus asked standing behind Haven in the kitchen.

“Hey, get out of here,” she told him after becoming aware of his presence, deep voice and all. “You’re not supposed to be in here. It’s like a health code violation or something.”

“Well, I don’t see any health inspectors around here, and I don’t have any illnesses, so—”

She took a pan of cooked sausage from the stove then looked at him. Doggone if he hadn’t shaved. The bit of hair on his face made him look even more manlier. His eyes looked darker. She wondered what he was planning on getting into today. “Good morning, Titus.”

“Good morning, Haven. Did you eat breakfast this morning?”

“I did. I had a couple pieces of sausage, toast and some hot chocolate.”

“Hot chocolate? You couldn’t have had any hot chocolate. I’ve been in my room all morning.”

Haven giggled. “You’re funny.”

“Since you’ve eaten, that means I have to eat alone this morning.”

“No worries. The dining room is full of people for you to talk to if you absolutely have to talk to somebody. Or you could use the time to focus on your research.”

I’d rather focus on you. “Right. Research,” he said, then walked over to get coffee. He placed the cup on a table and went through the buffet line to make himself a plate. He sat there alone pretending to be engrossed in his phone but kept his eyes on Haven. That’s all the research he was doing right now. He watched her work, secretly admiring her dedication to her job. The way she kept the food coming – fresh and hot. The way she tidied up and cleaned up the place. The way she tended to the guests, made sure they were comfortable. And he took in her features – her almond-shaped eyes, pecan brown skin and shapely figure.

She made another pot of coffee and looked over at him.

He gave a half smile and glanced at his phone, pretending he didn’t see her heading in his direction.

“I hope the eggs were to your liking,” she said.

“They were delicious—same as yesterday.”

“Good.”

“Hey,” he said getting her attention before she could walk away. “What do you have planned for today?”

“Work, and plenty of it.”

“That’s too bad because at eleven, I’m scheduled for a hike and I could use a plus one.”

“Wait—what?”

“I signed up for a hike. I think there’s going to be about fifteen of us.”

“I definitely can’t go on a hike.”

“You can if you really wanted to, just like you went with me yesterday, Ms. Efficient.”

“Stop calling me that—makes me sound like an old lady.”

“I, in no way, am implying that you’re an old lady. Would I ask an old lady to hike with me?”

“Probably not, but seriously, I can’t go. I’m going to be super busy around here,” she said and that was no lie. She had to clean up after breakfast, sweep and mop the floors in the dining area and the lobby, pick up more toilet paper since the order she placed a few days ago had yet to come in.
